Agartala: Jan 10: A heated debate unfolded in the Tripura Assembly when Congress MLA Gopal Roy demanded an extension of the winter session, citing a lack of time to discuss crucial issues. During the proceedings, Roy created a stir by protesting in the well of the House when his request was denied by the Speaker. Despite his solitary protest, the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) report, which recommended the current session’s schedule, was passed by voice vote.

On Friday, both the CPI(M) and Congress parties raised concerns about the insufficient time allocated for discussion in the ongoing session. Senior Congress MLA Gopal Roy called for an extension, proposing at least two extra days to allow members to discuss key issues. However, his plea was rejected by the Speaker.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath defended the short session, explaining that the decision had been made after consensus in the BAC meeting. He mentioned that the budget session, which includes the Governor’s address and budget presentation in March, would be longer, and sufficient time would be given to discuss departmental issues during that session.

Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury strongly objected, asserting that without proper discussion time, the government would miss the chance to highlight its achievements. He also pointed out a recommendation from the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman, who suggested that smaller states, including Tripura, should have longer assembly sessions, with at least 60 days dedicated to legislative work. This call for a longer session reflects concerns over the need for more time to address important state matters and ensure comprehensive discussions in the assembly.
