Agartala: Mar 20: The Tripura Students Federation (TSF) has announced plans to block a national highway in support of their demand for the use of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. This decision comes after years of advocating for the inclusion of the Roman script in secondary and higher secondary examinations for Kokborok, with little progress.
The TSF has expressed frustration over the lack of action from authorities, despite submitting multiple deputations to the Chief Minister, Board President, and Governor. Students have repeatedly raised the issue with the education department, but it remains unresolved. The organization highlights the pressure on students taking Kokborok examinations, who are forced to write in the Bengali script, a system many find difficult and unfamiliar.
This isn’t the first time the TSF has taken action. Previously, they declared full support for the Tipra Indigenous Student Federation’s (TISF) national highway blockade, which demanded the same Roman script recognition . The TISF also blocked roadways and railways across Tripura, backed by the TSF and other indigenous student bodies.
The TSF’s protest aims to push the government and education authorities to recognize the Roman script for Kokborok, ensuring greater accessibility and ease for students while honoring the language’s cultural significance.
