Agartala: Mar 21: Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has expressed strong support for the Tripura Indigenous Students Federation (TISF)’s demand for the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. Speaking to journalists today, as he was stopped by TISF activists on his way to the Tripura Legislative Assembly’s budget session, Barman reaffirmed that the Congress party has been advocating for this cause for a long time.

Barman criticized both the Left Front and the current government for their lack of action on the issue. He pointed out that, despite the longstanding demand from the indigenous community, neither the previous government nor the current administration has taken meaningful steps toward recognizing the Roman script for Kokborok. According to Barman, this ongoing delay has ignored the sentiments of the indigenous people, who have consistently raised this issue with a clear sense of cultural and linguistic pride.

The MLA stressed that the Congress party has always supported the adoption of the Roman script, highlighting the importance of this move for the cultural preservation and educational empowerment of the indigenous Tripuri community. He emphasized that the demand is not merely a symbolic gesture but one rooted in a desire for greater recognition of their language and identity.

Barman urged the government to take immediate action to fulfill the demand, noting that the indigenous community has patiently waited for years. He called on the authorities to understand the significance of this issue and to act swiftly to implement the Roman script for Kokborok, which he believes would benefit the language’s speakers and contribute to the preservation of their rich cultural heritage.
