Agartala, October 2: Tripura joined the nation in celebrating the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, with full reverence and tributes.

The state government’s official program was held at the Circuit House area in Agartala, where Industry Minister Santana Chakma paid homage to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Following this, a floral tribute was offered at the Gandhi Ghat which she attended along with West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar and other dignitaries.

Every year on October 2, India observes the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi to commemorate his legacy of non-violence, truth, and social justice.

Born in Porbandar, Gujarat, in 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi played a pivotal role in India’s independence from British colonial rule, using peaceful resistance to inspire millions of people across the country.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Minister Chakma highlighted Gandhi’s contribution to shaping modern India.

“Mahatma Gandhi not only led India to freedom but also envisioned an India that was self-reliant, or ‘atmanirbhar.’ He stressed the importance of village development, and today’s government, both at the Centre and in the state, is working to fulfil that vision,” she stated.

Chakma also urged citizens to wear Khadi, the handwoven fabric promoted by Gandhi, to honor his ideals of self-reliance and support for local artisans as because Khadi represents not just a fabric but the soul of India’s freedom struggle.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party organized its own commemoration at Agartala’s Congress Bhavan, followed by a procession.

Senior Congress leaders, including Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, participated along with other dignitaries from affiliated organizations.

Addressing the media, Saha underscored the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and democracy.

“Mahatma Gandhi, through his commitment to non-violence, ensured India’s freedom and the establishment of democratic and constitutional rights. Today, as we celebrate his birth anniversary, it is concerning that there seems to be an ongoing attempt to divide India through hatred and violence, disrupting the fraternity among people,” Saha remarked.

He further emphasized that the leadership of the Congress party, guided by Gandhi’s principles, is uniting the nation against divisive forces.

“Gandhi’s message of unity is more important than ever in today’s India,” Saha asserted.

Popularly known as Bapu, Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence, tolerance, and social justice continue to inspire generations across the world. His principles remain highly relevant in a world grappling with challenges that demand peaceful and inclusive solutions.
