Agartala: May 20: In Tripura, a quiet yet powerful transformation is reshaping rural lives. What was once a traditional skill—bamboo weaving—has evolved into a symbol of empowerment for women, thanks to the efforts of Self-Help Group (SHG) Didis who are turning craftsmanship into opportunity.

These women are now creating stunning bamboo jewellery—lightweight, biodegradable, and intricately designed—that’s catching attention not only in local markets but across India and abroad. More than just ornaments, each handcrafted piece tells a story of resilience, sustainability, and economic independence.

Branded under the ‘Aakanksha’ label, the bamboo jewellery initiative is supported by NITI Aayog under the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme. In a recent post, NITI Aayog applauded these women’s efforts, calling them a seamless blend of tradition and innovation. An official associated with the project noted that each ornament represents the voice of sustainable living and the unbreakable spirit of rural women.

As the world embraces eco-friendly choices, the SHG Didis of Tripura are demonstrating how true sustainability can begin at home—with local resources and skilled hands. Their bamboo creations are emerging as symbols of a greener, more inclusive economy.

To support local economies and boost grassroots entrepreneurship, NITI Aayog launched the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative on March 13, 2024, under the Aspirational Blocks Programme. As part of this initiative, the ‘Aakanksha’ logo was unveiled to consolidate and promote indigenous products from 500 Aspirational Blocks.

A dedicated window for the Aspirational Blocks Programme under the ‘Aakanksha’ brand has also been established on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, enabling wider visibility and market access for these unique local creations.
