Junagadh (Gujarat), June 20: The Election Commission (EC) has ordered re-polling at two booths in Gujarat’s Visavadar Assembly constituency following allegations of booth capturing during the recent by-elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had formally complained about irregularities and bogus voting, prompting swift action from the EC.

Re-polling will take place on Saturday, June 21, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at booth number 111 in Nava Vaghania village and booth number 86 in Malida village, both located in Junagadh district. The EC’s decision followed an investigation based on ground reports and video evidence, which confirmed that the voting process had been compromised.

The by-elections for Visavadar and Kadi Assembly seats were held under tight scrutiny. However, tensions flared in Visavadar when AAP candidate Gopal Italia accused rival parties of distributing liquor and cash to sway voters. Italia had earlier led a sting operation exposing alleged electoral malpractices in the area.

In response to the controversy, the EC has assured enhanced security for the re-poll, with police and paramilitary forces to be deployed to maintain law and order and ensure a fair voting process.

The results of the Visavadar and Kadi by-elections are set to be declared on June 23. Political observers are closely monitoring the developments, especially given the implications for rural electoral conduct.

Visavadar holds historical and political significance in Gujarat, having been represented by former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel. The constituency, largely rural, is seen as a bellwether for farmer and Patidar community sentiment, both of which play a crucial role in shaping state politics.
