Agartala, July 9: Tripura has emerged as a key player in India’s organic agriculture sector, exporting 1,332 metric tonnes of organic produce over the past three years, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the state’s first-ever Organic Buyer-Seller Meet, Nath announced that Tripura has developed over 25,000 hectares of certified organic farmland and formed 53 Organic Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs). The state’s organic exports include 666 MT of Queen and Kew variety pineapples, 574 MT of ginger, 52 MT of turmeric, 33 MT of aromatic rice, and 7 MT of bird’s eye chilli.

“Tripura is not just adopting organic farming—it is building a full ‘farm to fork’ ecosystem. The world now demands safe, chemical-free, and traceable food, and Tripura is ready to lead that transformation,” Nath said.

The state is promoting high-value organic crops such as Queen pineapple (with a GI tag), bird’s eye chilli, black and aromatic rice (Harinarayan, Kalikhasa), millet, sesame, turmeric, ginger, and scented lemon. Tripura’s pineapples, known for their sweet taste, golden yellow hue, and unique aroma, are thriving in the state’s humid, hilly climate with minimal chemical use.

According to Nath, exports have reached markets in Oman, Dubai, and Dhaka, while domestic supply chains connect to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Guwahati.

He emphasized that organic farming is a future-ready solution to global health and environmental crises. India has registered 7.3 million hectares under organic farming with an annual export value of ₹4,007 crore.

“Tripura may be a small state, but we have big dreams. Let’s unite and make ‘Organic Tripura’ a leading force in Organic India,” Nath said, urging buyers to visit farms and witness the transformation firsthand.
