Kolkata, July 12, 2025: Allegations of rape inside the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) campus have triggered serious concerns about the institution’s security protocols. The incident reportedly occurred late Friday night inside the boys’ hostel on the premier institute’s southern Kolkata premises.

Initial reports suggested that the victim was a student of IIM-C. However, police later clarified that the woman was not enrolled at the institute but had known the accused—a second-year PGDM student—through social media.

The incident has raised critical questions about how a non-student gained access to the secured campus. Of particular concern is how the woman was allowed entry into the boys’ hostel, where visitor access is restricted and entry for women is reportedly prohibited.

According to the complaint filed by the survivor at Haridevpur Police Station, she had attempted to register her name in the visitors’ logbook at the entrance. However, the accused allegedly prevented her from doing so. This omission has brought the role of the campus security staff under scrutiny.

Investigators are probing whether the accused, a student from Bengaluru who joined IIM-C in 2023 after clearing the Common Admission Test (CAT), exploited his position to bypass security norms. Police are questioning campus security personnel and reviewing CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The identity of the accused has not yet been officially disclosed and is expected to be revealed once he is produced in court.

Meanwhile, IIM-Calcutta has not issued an official statement, but sources indicate that an internal review of hostel access policies and visitor protocols is likely to follow. The incident has sparked outrage and raised demands for stricter security measures to ensure the safety of all individuals on educational campuses.
