Chandigarh, July 21 — Renowned academician and veteran political figure Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh was sworn in as the 19th Governor of Haryana on Monday, succeeding Bandaru Dattatraya. The oath of office was administered by Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, during a solemn swearing-in ceremony at the Haryana Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

Prof. Ghosh, a distinguished scholar and seasoned politician, headed the Department of Political Science at a prominent Kolkata college for nearly four decades. He has made significant contributions to academic research and public discourse, working on various University Grants Commission (UGC) and Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) projects. His scholarly articles have appeared in several reputed journals and publications.

The event was attended by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha Harvinder Kalyan, several Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, MLAs, Vice Chancellors, and senior government officials. Governor Ghosh’s wife, Mitra Ghosh, and the Chief Minister’s wife, Suman Saini, were also present along with members of the Governor’s family.

Ghosh’s appointment is seen as both a recognition of his extensive academic and political journey and a tribute to the senior leadership that laid the foundations of the BJP in West Bengal. He notably served as the BJP’s state president from 1999 to 2002, a period marked by gradual party growth in the region.

Following the swearing-in, Governor Ghosh greeted dignitaries and received their felicitations. A ceremonial guard of honour was presented by a contingent of the Haryana Armed Police, marking the formal beginning of his gubernatorial tenure.

The ceremony reflected a blend of tradition, dignity, and respect for a life dedicated to public service and scholarship.
