Agartala, July 22: In a symbolic gesture celebrating its rich legislative legacy, the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday observed ‘Historic July’, marking two significant milestones—the establishment of the Assembly on July 1, 1963, and its relocation from Ujjayanta Palace to its present location on July 22, 2011.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen, Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Pal, and several other leaders, including Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, participated in a commemorative event at the Assembly premises. Dr. Saha noted that this is the first time such a historic celebration has been organized, calling it a moment of pride for the state.

Recalling the Assembly’s glorious past, the Chief Minister described it as a “temple of democracy” where both the Treasury Bench and Opposition play complementary roles. He proposed that future observances should be more inclusive and expansive, involving former Chief Ministers and ex-Speakers who are still alive, to honour their contributions.

Dr. Saha also highlighted the contributions of Late Upendra Kumar Roy, the first Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, who served from July 1, 1963, to July 11, 1967, under then Chief Minister Sachindra Lal Singha.

Adding a touch of sustainability to the event, the Chief Minister and other dignitaries participated in a tree plantation drive within the Assembly campus.

The event was attended by senior leaders including Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, Ministers Ratan Lal Nath, Animesh Debbarma, Pranajit Singha Roy, Bikash Debbarma, and MLAs Gopal Chandra Roy and Birajit Sinha.

The event marked a solemn tribute to Tripura’s democratic journey and its evolving legislative framework over the decades.
