Agartala, July 24: In a major development, Dr. Abhijit Nath, Assistant Professor at Ramthakur General Degree College in Agartala, has been suspended over serious allegations of malpractice, forgery, and gross violation of government admission norms.

The action follows a report published in a local Bengali daily on July 19, which revealed that Dr. Nath was allegedly involved in unauthorized and illegal activities related to the admission process for the 1st Semester Undergraduate Course (2025-26) at the college.

According to the report, on July 18, college authorities discovered that several students, whose names were not on the official admission list, were found in possession of fee cards bearing forged signatures of college officials. This raised alarm over possible manipulation within the admission system.

Acting on this, the Department of Higher Education issued a suspension order on July 23, stating that preliminary information from the college indicated 69 cases of unauthorized admissions. The order reads, “It appears that Dr. Nath, Assistant Professor, Ramthakur College, was involved in serious malpractice, forgery, and a gross violation of admission norms.”

The suspension order further directs that Dr. Nath remain stationed at his headquarters in Agartala, West Tripura, during the suspension period and refrain from leaving without prior approval from the concerned authorities.

This incident has sparked concern among academic circles and raised questions about transparency and oversight in the college’s admission procedures. The Higher Education Department is expected to initiate a detailed investigation to ascertain the extent of the malpractice and whether other individuals may also be involved.

Meanwhile, student unions and civil society groups have demanded strict action and greater accountability to prevent such incidents in the future and safeguard the integrity of the higher education system in Tripura.
