Agartala, July 24: Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy by generating 2 megawatts of solar power under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a major step toward energy self-reliance, according to an official press release.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the scheme aims to promote rooftop solar installations across households in India, allowing consumers to reduce electricity bills and earn by selling surplus power to the grid.

As per official sources, 15,730 registrations have been completed in Tripura so far. Of these, 591 solar installations have already been completed, and 516 beneficiaries have received government subsidies. Impressively, 117 consumers have managed to reduce their power bills to zero this month and collectively earned Rs. 43,545 by selling excess electricity to the grid — the amount has already been credited to their accounts.

The scheme offers substantial financial support, with each eligible household receiving up to Rs. 85,800 in subsidies. A 1 KW solar unit can generate approximately 100 units of electricity monthly, sufficient for the needs of an average household. Surplus electricity can be exported to the grid, enabling consumers to earn additional income.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), the nodal agency implementing the scheme in the state, has set an ambitious target to expand solar energy generation capacity to 50 megawatts within the next year.

This initiative not only strengthens Tripura’s commitment to renewable energy but also aligns with the national vision for sustainable development and environmental conservation. Officials believe the scheme will significantly reduce dependence on conventional power sources and empower citizens through clean, affordable energy solutions.
