Agartala: July 26: Reaffirming its commitment to farmers’ welfare, the BJP-led Tripura government has launched a new phase of paddy procurement under the ‘Minimum Support Price (MSP), KMS 2025-26 (2nd Crop/Rabi 2024-25)’ initiative. The joint effort by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare aims to boost rural livelihoods and support farming communities across the state.
The program was officially flagged off on Saturday by Minister Sushanta Chowdhury at Battala under Satchand Panchayat in South Tripura’s Sabroom subdivision. Procurement began from Brajendranagar, considered Sabroom’s grain hub, which was severely affected by floods last year. Chowdhury said this was a conscious step to support distressed farmers and reaffirm the government’s farmer-first approach.
The state targets procurement of 30,000 metric tons of paddy this season at an MSP of Rs 23—up from the previous Rs 17.50—through 31 centres across Tripura. Chowdhury highlighted that this increase aligns with the government’s pre-poll promise to enhance farmer income and ensure price security.
“Our government is a farmer-friendly government. Since 2018, we’ve procured over 2.25 lakh MT of paddy from around 1.17 lakh farmers and infused Rs 446 crore directly into their pockets,” Chowdhury said.
He added that fair procurement not only stabilizes farmers’ incomes but also strengthens the rural economy and promotes long-term agricultural resilience.
Several dignitaries including Minister Sukla Charan Noatia, South Tripura Zilla Sabhadhipati Dipak Dutta, MLAs Mailafru Mog and Sapna Majumder, and former MLA Sankar Roy attended the event. The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s agrarian sector, offering much-needed support to cultivators and boosting local economies.
