Agartala, July 29:
Tensions flared in Tripura’s Khowai district on Monday as Tipra Motha supporters staged a protest outside Champahour police station, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of three party workers arrested in connection with Sunday’s violence during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme in Asharambari mandal.

The protest turned tense when scuffles broke out between police personnel and demonstrators. The situation prompted authorities to deploy additional security forces around the police station to maintain law and order.

The three arrested Tipra Motha workers were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody following their court appearance on Monday. Protesters insisted on their innocence and alleged that the arrests were politically motivated and made without proper investigation.

The incident in question occurred on Sunday at the residence of BJP supporter Surajit Debbarma in Takchaya ADC Village (under Booth No. 30), where the Mann Ki Baat broadcast was being aired. During the event, violence broke out, resulting in injuries to at least seven BJP karyakartas and the vandalization of multiple motorcycles and vehicles.

In response, BJP leaders lodged an FIR naming 24 individuals allegedly involved in the attack. The police subsequently launched an investigation, leading to the arrests.

While Tipra Motha leaders have denied involvement in the violence, they have accused the police of acting under pressure from the ruling party. They claim the arrests are an attempt to malign their party and suppress dissent within the alliance.

The incident has intensified tensions within the BJP–Tipra Motha coalition, with growing calls from both sides for political maturity and accountability. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
