Agartala, Aug 6:
Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma on Wednesday announced that no public gathering will be held in Agartala this year to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples due to persistent heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

The minister made this announcement during a joining programme organized by BJP’s Janajati Morcha at 43 Mile area, located at the foothills of Atharomura in the Krishnapur constituency. He cited ongoing rainfall and the resulting unfavorable natural conditions as the reason for cancelling the rally.

At the event, 24 tribal families who were previously associated with CPI(M) formally joined the BJP. Minister Debbarma welcomed them by handing over party flags. The event was also attended by MDC Bidyut Debbarma, Krishnapur Mandal Vice-President Gopal Das, and other BJP leaders.

In his address, the minister stated that the tribal population in the region had been deprived of basic rights for over 35 years under CPI(M) rule. “Electricity, drinking water, healthcare, and education—all were neglected. The BJP government has put an end to this long-standing deprivation and is ushering in a new era of development,” he said.

Debbarma emphasized that the BJP government is working tirelessly for the welfare of tribal communities, irrespective of political affiliations. He said the mass joining of tribal families is not just a political success but a reflection of people’s growing trust and confidence in the BJP.

The new members said they had long been used as mere vote banks without receiving any real benefits. Their decision to join BJP was driven by a desire for genuine development and better access to government services. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from locals, and party leaders hinted at more such initiatives in the future.
