Agartala, August 7:
In a prompt response to a serious allegation of molestation, a man identified as Sukumar Banik has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a female passenger aboard a moving bus in Bishramganj. The incident, which sparked public outrage, led to immediate action from law enforcement authorities under direct instructions from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
The arrest was carried out late Wednesday night in a joint operation by the Crime Branch, Sepahijala district administration, and Bishalgarh Police. Banik, a resident of Chandranagar in Bishalgarh, was taken into custody by the Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station and produced before the court on Thursday for further legal proceedings.
Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken to ensure justice for the victim. The authorities have urged the public to remain calm while the case is being handled as per law.
The incident occurred on Tuesday and triggered widespread anger, particularly at the Bishramganj Motor Stand, where tensions escalated after a group of Tipra Motha-backed individuals allegedly attacked the passenger bus in which the victim was travelling.
According to sources, the unrest began when a girl on board the bus claimed she had been inappropriately touched by a male co-passenger from another community. This allegation led to a confrontation and later, an attack on the bus by a group of individuals expressing solidarity with the victim.
Police have termed the situation as sensitive and are monitoring it closely to prevent further escalation. Security measures have been strengthened in and around Bishramganj to maintain law and order.
Authorities have appealed for restraint and promised a fair and thorough investigation into both the molestation and the subsequent unrest.
