Agartala, Oct 23: Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has reached out to Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, regarding the status of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala.
In a letter dated October 22, Chowdhury acknowledged the on-going challenges related to infrastructure and staff that have delayed the airport’s designation as an Immigration Check Post (ICP).
He noted that the State Government, in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs, is working diligently to meet the requirements for State Police Personnel deployment and infrastructure enhancements needed for ICP status. The State Home Department has already forwarded a list of personnel, approved by the State Cabinet, following guidelines from the Bureau of Immigration.
To facilitate further progress, Chowdhury has requested the Ministry to share the eligibility criteria for police personnel as set by the Bureau of Immigration, as well as details of any additional infrastructure needs.
This information is expected to help the Transport Department collaborate more effectively with the State Home Department and MBB Airport officials to meet the requirements as swiftly as possible.
He reiterated the significance of elevating MBB Airport to ICP status, which is seen as a crucial step towards its eventual recognition as an international airport. The minister urged prompt action to expedite the necessary processes.
