Agartala, Oct 13 — Tripura Leader of Opposition and CPIM Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Monday strongly condemned the alleged attack on the party’s Patichari office in South Tripura, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating repeated assaults on the Left party.

Chaudhury visited the vandalised office, which was reportedly ransacked and set ablaze a few days ago, marking the fifth such incident since the BJP came to power in the state. “Our Patichari office has been attacked five times and looted twice since 2018. This time, miscreants even hurled crude bombs at the martyr’s altar nearby,” he told reporters, referring to the memorial dedicated to CPIM workers killed in the 1988 Bir Chandra Manu massacre.

The CPIM leader alleged that despite the massacre occurring during the Congress regime, BJP supporters were now targeting Left cadres who organise annual commemorations for the slain party members. “The BJP has nothing to do with the tragic incident of October 12, 1988, yet our workers are being attacked for observing a simple memorial event,” Chaudhury said.

Accusing the ruling party of distorting historical facts for political gain, he claimed that the BJP was attempting to portray those responsible for the 1988 killings as heroes. “The saffron party has adopted a new scheme to twist history. The people who were involved in the attack and never had any connection with the BJP are now being glorified as martyrs by them,” he alleged.

Chaudhury urged the state government and police to take immediate action against those responsible for the recurring violence, warning that continued attacks on opposition offices and memorials reflected a growing intolerance of democratic opposition in Tripura.
