Agartala, Oct 15 — Fresh tension has erupted along the Indo-Bangladesh border after a youth from Adampur area under North Kalamchoura Gram Panchayat was critically injured when a BSF official allegedly opened fire on him on Friday night (October 10). The injured, identified as Shariat Ali alias Suman, is now battling for his life in the CCU unit of ILS Hospital, Agartala.

According to local sources, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. when Shariat went in search of a missing cow belonging to his father, Abul Kashem. The family’s farmland lies barely 150 meters from their home near the international border. While returning home after failing to locate the animal, a BSF jawan of the 49th Battalion allegedly fired at him from behind using his in-charge rifle. The bullet pierced through his left chest and exited through his arm, leaving him severely wounded.

Hearing the gunshot, villagers rushed to the spot and rescued the injured youth, taking him first to the Boxanagar Social Health Centre. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to GB Hospital, and later he was shifted to ILS Hospital, where he underwent a major surgery.

On Tuesday, Abul Kashem filed a written complaint at Kalamchoura Police Station, accusing the BSF jawan of firing deliberately while on duty at the Kalamchoura BOP between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Locals have condemned the incident as a blatant misuse of power, questioning why an unarmed Indian civilian was shot instead of being dealt with through lawful means. Many suspect it to be an attempt on his life.

Residents also alleged a pattern of misconduct by the 49th Battalion BSF, citing past controversies, including firing incidents and harassment of local officials and civilians. The district administration and police are now closely monitoring the situation.
