Agartala, Oct 29: Amid growing political unrest and visible internal friction within the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party’s core committee convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday in the presence of central observers to address the recent controversies that have rocked the state organization.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, BJP state president and MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, and former Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik. Central leaders including BJP Northeast coordinator Dr. Sambit Patra and state observer Dr. Rajdeep Roy also took part in the crucial discussions, aimed at restoring discipline and cohesion within the party ranks.
The closed-door session followed a string of public controversies — including Boxanagar MLA Tofajjal Hossain’s remarks against Deb and Bhowmik, Minister Sudhangshu Das’ “commission” comment, and Bhowmik’s reaction after being stopped at a police barricade in Santirbazar. The Chief Minister’s recent “Dada protection” statement at a public event further stirred social media debates and heightened tensions within the party.
The BJP’s state leadership has already served a show-cause notice to Hossain, who is expected to face disciplinary action. Party insiders revealed that discussions also touched upon the strained ties between the BJP and its ally Tipra Motha, as differences continue ahead of the upcoming ADC elections.
Following the meeting, Dr. Saha shared a photo on social media showing himself alongside Deb, Bhowmik, Bhattacharjee, Minister Ratanlal Nath, Dr. Patra, and Dr. Roy — symbolizing unity within the leadership.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife about an impending cabinet reshuffle, with reports suggesting that a minister may be dropped to make way for a new face. Former state prabhari Sunil Deodhar also arrived in Agartala and met several individuals at the state guest house, adding to the day’s political significance.
