Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 3: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team for scripting history by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title, describing it as a “moment of immense pride for the entire nation.”
In a post on social media, the Chief Minister lauded the team’s determination and resilience, saying their triumph would inspire countless young women to pursue their dreams without fear. “The fighting spirit displayed by the Indian team throughout the tournament deserves special mention. This victory is not only a proud moment for Indian cricket and the sporting fraternity but also for the entire nation. In a male-dominated society, where men’s achievements often take the spotlight, this World Cup win will serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment for every girl in the country,” Vijayan said.
The landmark win has elevated women’s cricket to unprecedented heights, sparking nationwide celebrations and symbolising a broader shift toward gender equality in sports.
Echoing Vijayan’s sentiments, Niketha Ramankutty, former chairperson of the South Zone Women’s Selection Committee and ex-chair of the Kerala Women’s Selection Committee, said the victory would ignite new enthusiasm for women’s cricket in Kerala. “Though there are no Malayalees in the current Test squad, Kerala can be proud that Arundathy Reddy has been playing for the state’s senior team for the past two years. Five Malayalee players now feature in India’s ODI and T20 teams—an impressive feat,” she noted.
Ramankutty also highlighted the role of Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president Jayesh George, who has been appointed as the first-ever chairman of the Women’s Premier League, saying this will further boost women’s cricket in the state.
