Agartala, Nov 3 — The Tripura Pradesh Congress Law, Human Rights & RTI Department on Monday lodged a strong protest with the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), accusing the state government of continued inaction over a series of alleged human rights violations since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2018.

In a detailed memorandum submitted to the commission, the Congress party highlighted multiple incidents between July 2024 and October 2025, including communal violence, alleged custodial torture, attacks on journalists, denial of medical care, restrictions in border areas, internet shutdowns, and curbs on free expression. The party accused the THRC of “indifference and inaction,” claiming this had emboldened perpetrators.

The memorandum cited the October 2024 communal clash in Kadamtala, North Tripura, where one person was killed and 17 injured after police opened fire during riots marked by arson and looting of Muslim-owned properties. It also mentioned the alleged custodial death of 26-year-old Badal Tripura in Sabroom on October 16, 2024, asserting that those responsible had not faced sufficient punishment or the victim’s family adequate compensation.

The Congress further referred to violence during the October 23, 2025 bandh called by the Tiprasa Civil Society, which saw arson and looting in Dhalai district’s Kamalpur subdivision, terming it another example of a worsening law-and-order situation.

The party alleged severe neglect of residents in border villages like Matinagar, citing restrictions on movement, and reported instances of denial of emergency medical care in Agartala hospitals. It also condemned repeated assaults on journalists and frequent internet shutdowns that, it said, undermined press freedom and digital rights.

The Congress urged the THRC to initiate prompt investigations, ensure justice for victims, and take steps to uphold civil liberties across Tripura, warning of a “revolutionary movement” if the commission failed to act within 15 days.
