Agartala, Nov 6: Former Tripura Pradesh Congress president and Congress Legislature Party leader Birajit Sinha on Thursday levelled serious allegations against Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, accusing him of facilitating illegal immigration and concealing criminal antecedents in violation of the Representation of the People Act.

Sinha’s statement came two days after Minister Roy led a protest rally against him, alleging that the Congress leader was operating a terror network. Responding sharply, Sinha announced that the Congress would initiate legal proceedings against Roy for “corrupt practices” and misuse of office.

“The BJP often blames Congress for supporting illegal immigration, but this time I have solid proof,” Sinha said. He alleged that a Bangladeshi national, who obtained an Indian identity under the name Sanjay Chakraborty, served as head cook at the Minister’s residence during Durga Puja. According to Sinha, Chakraborty recently assisted two Bangladeshi women — one a minor — to illegally cross into India. Both were detained by police and reportedly named Chakraborty, who now lives in Srirampur village under a new identity, Dipak Chakraborty.

Sinha said he had written to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and the Director General of Police, urging a full investigation into the matter. “This could be part of a larger network of illegal entrants operating under political protection,” he claimed.

The Congress MLA further accused Roy of hiding details of an FIR filed against him at West Agartala Police Station by journalist Anal Roy Chowdhury, editor of Pratibadi Kalam. Sinha also questioned Roy’s educational qualifications, alleging that his Class XII certificate from the Madhyabharat Board of Education, Gwalior, is not recognised by government authorities.

Sinha asserted that the Congress would seek legal remedy, calling Roy’s non-disclosure of criminal charges a violation of electoral law.
