Kabul, Dec 2 — Afghanistan and Tajikistan have pledged to deepen security coordination following last week’s deadly attack in Tajikistan’s Khatlon region that claimed the lives of three Chinese nationals. Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi spoke by phone with his Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin on Tuesday, condemning the incident and expressing readiness for joint action against cross-border threats.

In a statement, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said Muttaqi conveyed regret over the attack and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation for stability. He reiterated the Islamic Emirate’s willingness to enhance border security, conduct joint investigations, and coordinate efforts to counter hostile elements operating in the border region.

Both sides also discussed broader political relations, economic ties, regional initiatives, and ongoing security cooperation. Muttaqi noted that Afghanistan and Tajikistan have recently built an atmosphere of trust across political, economic, and security domains, but warned that certain groups were attempting to disrupt the improving relationship.

Tajik Foreign Minister Muhriddin highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and religious bonds between the two nations and expressed support for increasing border coordination. He affirmed Tajikistan’s commitment to positive engagement with Afghanistan and rejected actors seeking to destabilize bilateral ties.

According to the Afghan Foreign Ministry, the two ministers agreed to maintain regular communication between border forces, continue joint security cooperation committees, and hold technical meetings to strengthen mutual trust.

The Tajik Foreign Ministry earlier confirmed that the November 26 attack was launched from Afghan territory using a drone equipped with grenades and firearms, targeting the LLC Shohin SM employees’ camp near the Istiqlol border post. Three Chinese workers were killed.

In response, China has sought heightened protection for its citizens. Chinese Ambassador to Tajikistan Guo Zhijun urgently contacted Tajik officials on Sunday, urging stronger measures to ensure the safety of Chinese enterprises and personnel operating in the border region.
