Former Chief Minister of Tripura and incumbent Lok Sabha MP from West Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, on Friday strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent remark calling Union Home Minister Amit Shah “dangerous for the country”. In an interview with a Delhi-based media channel, Deb launched a sharp counter-attack, asserting that those who question Shah’s stature are the ones aligned with forces working against national interests.

Deb said that “anti-national elements will always be afraid of genuine nationalists”, adding that Amit Shah’s massive victory in the last parliamentary elections—where he secured the third-highest winning margin in the country—clearly reflected the public’s trust and affection. “The people blessed him with such a mandate. Naturally, those who are hand-in-glove with anti-national forces should feel afraid of him,” Deb remarked.

Terming Banerjee’s comment “absurd”, the BJP leader claimed that political parties sensing an imminent loss of power tend to rely on sensational statements to remain in the media glare. “Whenever a party is about to be dislodged from power, its leaders start speaking rubbish. They try to create controversy only to gain visibility. Let them stay busy with media noise; we will continue working on the ground for the people,” he said.

Deb further accused the Trinamool Congress leadership of making contradictory statements without acknowledging the federal structure of the country. Responding to a question about the Prime Minister’s Office-organised dinner, Deb expressed gratitude for being invited. “This is the first time I had the opportunity to attend such an occasion. All NDA MPs were present at the dinner hosted by the PMO,” he added.

Deb’s comments signal the BJP’s renewed offensive against opposition leaders as political tensions continue to intensify.
