Dharmanagar, Dec 16:
Tension has gripped Dharmanagar following the tragic death of Prasenjit Sarkar, a delivery worker from the Kameswar area, sparking widespread outrage and protests. Sarkar allegedly died by suicide after being publicly assaulted and humiliated by a group of youths following a dispute related to a delivery issue. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, reportedly caused severe emotional distress to the victim, intensifying public anger.

On Tuesday, outraged local youths staged demonstrations, initially blocking the Old Motor Stand before marching towards the office of the Superintendent of Police. Carrying banners reading “We Want Justice,” the protesters demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved in the alleged assault. They warned that if arrests are not made within 24 hours, the agitation would be intensified.

Adding to the pressure on the authorities, the State Committee of the Mazdoor Monitoring Cell submitted a deputation at Dharmanagar Police Station the same day, calling for a thorough investigation and strict punishment for those responsible. A delegation led by State president Biplab Kar, General Secretary Debika Choudhury, and members of the Tripura Railway Hawkers’ Association arrived from Agartala to meet Officer-in-Charge Mina Debbarma.

The delegation described the incident as “inhuman” and demanded a fair, impartial and speedy probe. They alleged that Sarkar, a Bluedart Courier delivery worker and a “hardworking labour-class youth,” was subjected to humiliation and mental torture over a trivial matter. Emphasising the broader implications, they said the dignity, safety and rights of working-class people must be protected.

Responding to the concerns, Officer-in-Charge Mina Debbarma assured the delegation that the police are treating the case with the utmost seriousness. She confirmed that an investigation is already underway and said appropriate legal action will be taken strictly on the basis of evidence.

Prasenjit Sarkar’s death has triggered grief and anger across Dharmanagar and neighbouring areas. Citizens, labour organisations and activists have united in demanding justice, while the viral video continues to fuel statewide outrage. The administration’s response is now under close public scrutiny as calls for accountability grow louder.
