Agartala: Police have successfully apprehended four out of the six notorious inmates who escaped from the Kalikapur District Correctional Home in Dharmanagar on October 1, 2025, marking significant progress in one of the most serious jailbreak cases in recent years.

The latest breakthrough came on Wednesday, nearly two months after the daring escape, with the arrest of fugitive Sunil Debbarma from Agartala. The arrest was made following a joint operation carried out by North Tripura and Sepahijala district police after sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering. Officials said Debbarma had been living in Agartala under a false identity for several weeks in an attempt to evade law enforcement agencies.

According to police sources, Debbarma’s movements were closely monitored based on technical inputs and local intelligence. His capture follows the earlier arrest of three other escapees shortly after the jailbreak, which police had described as a major success in the initial phase of the operation.

North Tripura Superintendent of Police said that multiple special teams have been constituted to trace the remaining two fugitives. “We are using modern technology, intelligence networks, and ground-level inputs to intensify monitoring across sensitive locations,” the SP said. Security checks have been stepped up in border areas, railway stations, bus terminals, and other transit points to prevent the fugitives from fleeing the state.

Investigators believe that the interrogation of Sunil Debbarma will provide vital clues about the movements and hideouts of the remaining escapees. Police are also examining whether the fugitives received external assistance during their escape and subsequent attempts to stay underground.

The jailbreak had earlier triggered widespread public concern, raising questions about security arrangements at the correctional home. However, police officials said the continued arrests have helped restore public confidence. Authorities have assured that corrective steps are being taken to strengthen prison security, including reviewing surveillance systems and standard operating procedures, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The search operation remains underway, and police expressed confidence that the remaining two escapees will also be apprehended soon.
