An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Morigaon district in Assam early Monday morning, causing momentary panic among residents across several parts of the Northeast. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred at 04:17:40 IST.
The NCS stated that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at latitude 26.37°N and longitude 92.29°E in Morigaon district, at a depth of 50 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface. Due to its moderate intensity and depth, the tremors were widely felt across multiple districts of Assam, including Guwahati, Nagaon, and nearby areas. Shaking was also reported from Shillong and other parts of neighbouring Meghalaya.
Many residents said they were awakened by the sudden shaking, with some stepping out of their homes as a precaution. However, there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property at the time of filing this report. Local authorities confirmed that the situation remained calm and under control.
Assam and the northeastern region of India fall under a seismically active zone and frequently experience earthquakes of varying intensities. Disaster management agencies have advised people to remain alert, follow safety guidelines, and rely only on official updates for accurate information.
