Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday addressed the media to allay public concerns following reports of suspected Nipah virus cases in neighboring West Bengal. He clarified that while a few cases have been detected outside the state, Tripura has not reported any Nipah infection so far. However, he stressed that the government has taken immediate precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

According to the Chief Minister, information received indicates that around three suspected Nipah virus cases have been identified in West Bengal. “We are aware that the Nipah virus is transmitted from fruit bats, also known as flying foxes, which are natural carriers of the virus. After receiving reports from West Bengal, I immediately directed the Health Department to take all necessary preventive steps,” Dr. Saha said.

He assured that the state Health Department is acting swiftly in line with government directives. Necessary alerts have been issued, and officials have been instructed to remain vigilant and prepared for any eventuality. Dr. Saha emphasized that there is no need for panic, urging citizens to rely only on official information. “There is no Nipah case in Tripura at present. People should not be confused by rumors or create unnecessary fear. All standard operating procedures are being followed. Citizens only need to stay cautious,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, National Health Mission (NHM) Mission Director Saju Vaheed A also confirmed that no active Nipah virus case has been reported in Tripura. He stated that surveillance has been intensified and that hospitals have strengthened preparedness, including isolation facilities and infection prevention protocols. Training is also being provided to healthcare personnel for early detection and effective management of suspected cases.

Health authorities have advised the public to follow precautionary measures such as avoiding raw date palm sap or toddy, consuming only properly washed and peeled fruits, avoiding half-eaten fruits fallen on the ground, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. Citizens have also been urged to strictly follow government advisories regarding patient care and safety practices.

The state government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health through continuous monitoring and preparedness.
