Former chief of the TIPRA Motha Party, Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a 500-seat modern community hall at Dhepa Twisa in West Manikya Dewan ADC village under Korbook subdivision. The project, sanctioned with an allocation of Rs 4 crore from the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) funds, fulfills a long-standing demand of the Uchoi community.
Addressing the gathering, Pradyot recalled a promise he made in 2021 while attending a cultural programme in Korbook. He said he was deeply moved by the discipline, cultural richness, and determination of the Uchoi people. Praising their focus on education, hard work, and anti-addiction values, he had pledged to support the construction of a dedicated community hall. “Today, I am proud to see that promise becoming a reality,” he remarked.
Despite financial limitations, members of the Uchoi community contributed by purchasing two kanis of land for the project. The proposed hall will serve as a central venue for cultural programmes, social functions, and welfare activities. It will also include a modern office space for the Ataibang Welfare Society, strengthening community coordination and development initiatives.
The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by CEM Purna Chanda Jamatia, Executive Members Kamal Koloi and Dolly Reang, MLAs Nandita Debbarma Reang and Sanjoy Manik Tripura, and Korbook Sub-Zonal Chairman Chirakumar Uchoi, among other dignitaries.
In his welcome address, community leader Sarfa Uchai emphasized that the Ataibang Welfare Society is a non-political platform dedicated to the holistic development of the Uchoi people. He noted that since 1979, the community had sought a modern hall and office space, a vision now realized.
The project is widely viewed as a landmark step toward strengthening tribal infrastructure and preserving cultural identity, with hopes that construction quality matches expectations.
