Agartala, February 25: In a major boost to Tripura’s renewable energy sector, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has helped the state surpass 8 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar power generation, marking a key milestone in decentralized energy production.

Amid strain on conventional power stations due to natural gas shortages, rooftop solar systems are emerging as a reliable alternative. Across the state, households are increasingly transforming their rooftops, tin sheds and open spaces into micro power stations that feed clean energy directly into the grid.

According to Biswajit Basu, Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, 2,350 electricity consumers have installed rooftop solar systems under the scheme, collectively generating over 8 MW. Agartala’s Circle No. 1 leads with 1,389 installations, followed by West Tripura Circle No. 2 (140), Gomati (180), Belonia in South Tripura (190), Sepahijala (145), Dharmanagar in North Tripura (72), Dhalai (68), Khowai (78) and Unakoti (88).

Basu said 2,053 beneficiaries have already received government subsidies totaling ₹17.27 crore. Many households have reduced their electricity bills to zero, while some are earning additional income by exporting surplus power under net metering regulations. A 1 kW rooftop plant typically generates about 100 units of electricity per month—adequate for an average household.

The corporation has set a target of achieving 50 MW of rooftop solar capacity by 2027 and is organizing special enrollment camps to boost participation. A dedicated control room has also been set up at its Agartala office to assist consumers with registration, vendor selection and subsidy claims.

Officials described the 8 MW milestone as a significant step toward making every home an energy producer.
