Mumbai, March 10: Senior political leader Jishnu Dev Varma was sworn in as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra at a formal ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of Maharashtra Lok Bhavan in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, in the presence of several senior political leaders, dignitaries and government officials. Soon after taking the oath, the Governor was presented with a ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Indian Navy.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar congratulated the newly sworn-in Governor by presenting bouquets. The ceremony was attended by a number of prominent personalities including former Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, and Director General of Police Sadanand Date.
Earlier, Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal read out the warrant of appointment issued by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in both Hindi and English announcing the appointment of Dev Varma as Governor. The ceremony began with the rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by the National Anthem and the State Song, performed by the police band.
Dev Varma, a member of the historic Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura, previously served as the Governor of Telangana since July 31, 2024. Before that, he held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, overseeing key portfolios such as Finance, Rural Development and Power.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by his wife Sudha Dev Varma, family members, senior ministers, legislators, university vice-chancellors and other officials.
Known for his interest in modern art, painting and sculpture, Dev Varma has also been associated with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and has contributed to cultural initiatives across Northeast India. He is also recognised as a writer and poet.
