Agartala, March 17: The Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) on Tuesday announced that elections to the 30-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will be held on April 13, setting the stage for a crucial political contest across the state’s tribal-dominated regions.

State Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar said the official notification will be issued on March 18. The last date for filing nominations is March 25, followed by scrutiny on March 26. Candidates can withdraw nominations until March 28, while counting of votes will take place on April 17.

The Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all TTAADC areas. According to the SEC, a total of 9,62,697 voters, including 4,80,666 women, are eligible to participate in the polls.

Director General of Police Anurag assured that comprehensive security arrangements will be deployed to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.

The TTAADC, which governs nearly two-thirds of Tripura, has been under the control of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) since 2021, led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. In the last council elections, TMP secured 18 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won nine seats.

The council comprises 28 elected members and two nominated by the state government. It plays a vital role in administering tribal areas, home to over 12 lakh people, with nearly 84 percent belonging to indigenous communities.

Established in 1984 under the 49th Constitutional Amendment, the TTAADC has been central to tribal self-governance in the state.

With major players like the BJP, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, TMP, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Indian National Congress intensifying campaigns, the upcoming polls are expected to significantly influence Tripura’s political landscape.
