Agartala, June 25: In a fiery press conference at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala on Wednesday, Dr. Vikrant Bhuria, Chairman of the All India Adivasi Congress, launched a blistering attack on the ruling BJP, accusing it of suppressing voices of dissent and branding it a “Goonda Party.”
Dr. Bhuria extended his full support to senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, who is at the center of a political storm over remarks highlighting alleged mistreatment of tribals by BJP leaders. Referring to a widely condemned incident in Madhya Pradesh—where a man, allegedly a BJP leader, was seen urinating on a tribal man—Bhuria said the episode reveals the party’s true attitude toward tribal and Dalit communities.
“This cowardly act reflects the BJP’s deep-rooted disdain for tribal communities across the country,” Bhuria said. He accused the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan of attempting to cover up the incident by forcibly relocating the victim to Bhopal and offering compensation to his wife. “But the victim’s wife refused, demanding justice instead,” he added.
Dr. Bhuria also criticized the BJP’s aggressive reaction to Roy Barman’s comments, including the attack on his government quarters by BJP’s tribal wing. “Sudip Roy Barman has exposed the BJP’s truth. Their attempt to silence him shows their fear of the truth,” he said.
He further asserted that the days of the BJP government are “numbered” and expressed confidence that India is ready for change under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Ashish Kumar Saha also spoke at the event, slamming the state government for its failure to maintain law and order, safeguard indigenous rights, and fulfill development commitments.
