Agartala, July 15: A long-standing property dispute between two brothers took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) demolished a portion of a house at Math Chowmuhani in the state capital in compliance with a High Court directive.

The demolition drive was carried out under heavy police security to ensure law and order during the operation. Bulldozers were deployed to remove part of the residence of retired teacher Dipal Pal, while officials supervised the execution of the court’s order.

According to administrative sources, the dispute dates back to 2021–22, when Chayan Pal filed a complaint alleging that a section of the building had been constructed in violation of municipal building regulations. The matter subsequently reached the High Court, which, after hearing the case, directed the concerned authorities to take appropriate action strictly in accordance with the law.

Acting on the court’s directive, the Agartala Municipal Corporation undertook the demolition exercise. Officials maintained that the operation was conducted solely to implement the High Court’s order and that all legal procedures were followed before initiating the action.

Although the demolition was completed peacefully, a large number of local residents gathered at the site, drawing considerable public attention. The presence of police personnel helped prevent any untoward incident during the operation.

Family members of the affected household strongly objected to the demolition, claiming that the issue was not one of illegal construction but a decades-old land dispute between two brothers. They alleged that the portion of the house demolished had been constructed nearly 30 years ago and should not have been treated as an unauthorized structure. The family maintained that the legal dispute over ownership and land rights had not been adequately considered.

Municipal authorities, however, reiterated that the demolition was carried out only in compliance with judicial directions and denied any other motive behind the action.

The incident has generated widespread discussion across Agartala, with residents expressing mixed reactions. While some viewed the demolition as a necessary step to enforce building regulations and uphold the rule of law, others believed that greater attention should have been given to resolving the underlying family dispute.

The case has once again highlighted the complexities surrounding property disputes, municipal regulations and judicial enforcement, making it one of the most talked-about incidents in the city.
