Assam Police seized a massive consignment of cannabis worth over ₹2 crore after intercepting a truck arriving from Tripura’s Jirania area on Monday. The narcotics were cleverly hidden in the vehicle’s outer body panels, but the attempt to smuggle them into Assam was foiled during routine checks at the Churaibari watch post.

According to police officials, around 10 a.m. on Monday, a 12-wheeler empty truck bearing registration number NL06A-7358 crossed the Tripura border and entered Assam. During routine inspection, officers initially found nothing suspicious inside the empty truck. However, a more detailed search revealed several cannabis packets concealed within the truck’s exterior body.

A total of 68 packets of dry cannabis, weighing approximately 370 kilograms, were recovered from both sides of the truck. Superintendent of Police Anirban Sharma stated that the seized consignment has a black-market value exceeding ₹2 crore. The truck driver, Rakesh Chakraborty, a resident of Khamarbari under Jirania subdivision in West Tripura, was immediately detained.

During interrogation, Chakraborty admitted that he was transporting the cannabis from Jirania to Lung Shillong in exchange for ₹30,000. He also confessed that he had previously smuggled cannabis out of Tripura using similar methods. Assam Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and further investigation is underway.

The incident has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of Tripura Police’s anti-narcotics efforts. Despite multiple police stations located along the national highway, the truck managed to pass through the state without being intercepted. This successful seizure by Assam Police has highlighted alleged lapses and inactivity on the part of Tripura authorities, bringing the state’s anti-drug operations under renewed scrutiny.
