In view of the limited revenue-generating capacity of the northeastern states, Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb raised a significant concern in Parliament, urging the Central Government to take full responsibility for funding both pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes for tribal students in the region.

Deb highlighted that the financial constraints of states in the Northeast make it extremely challenging for them to contribute even a minimal share to centrally sponsored schemes. He stressed that such financial burdens often hinder the proper execution of vital welfare programs that are essential for the education and upliftment of tribal communities. At a time when the region is striving for development and greater inclusion, he argued, education should not suffer due to the fiscal limitations of state governments.

He strongly appealed for complete central support to ensure that tribal students receive uninterrupted financial assistance for their academic pursuits. According to Deb, removing the states’ share from these schemes would not only ease administrative pressure but also accelerate educational advancement across tribal-dominated areas.

The MP also raised an important issue regarding the stagnant scholarship amounts, which have not been revised since the 2019–20 financial year. He questioned whether the government plans to review and enhance the allocation, considering rising educational expenses and inflation. Deb noted that without timely revisions, the scholarships fail to meet the actual needs of students, diminishing their effectiveness.

Addressing his query directly to Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, Deb sought clear information on the government’s long-term policy approach and whether any revision or expansion of scholarship support is under consideration.

Through his intervention, Biplab Kumar Deb emphasized the urgent need for strengthened central assistance to ensure that every tribal student in the Northeast has access to the educational opportunities they deserve.
