Agartala, January 27: The Tripura Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad (TUGMP), the tribal wing of the CPI(M) and a key ally of the principal opposition in the state, will hold its 23rd central conference on January 29 and 30, party leaders announced on Tuesday.

GMP General Secretary Radha Charan Debbarma said the organisational conference process had been underway since May and will formally culminate with the two-day central conference later this month. He noted that conferences have already been completed in 557 local committees and 796 primary committees across 23 subdivisions of Tripura, with subdivision-level conferences concluded by December 8.

Debbarma highlighted that this marks the highest-ever membership enrolment for the organisation, with around 88,000 new members added. He said a significant number of young people participated in the conference process, and public engagement in party programmes has increased compared to previous years.

The conference will begin on January 29 with a public meeting in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, where TUGMP President Naresh Jamatia will hoist the party flag. Leaders expected to address the meeting include All India Adivasi Rashtriya Adhikar Manch Chairman Jitendra Chowdhury and Vice President Brinda Karat, along with Dr. Pulin Baske and Pappu Buro. Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar will speak during the closed-door sessions, which will be attended by around 550 delegates from across the state.

Debbarma said the conference will focus on building a collective movement against what he described as divisive politics and will raise issues affecting the working class, including a demand for 200 days of guaranteed employment with enhanced wages. Resolutions are also expected against alleged corruption in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and state administration.

The party will reiterate its long-standing demand for the passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, noting that promises by the BJP and TIPRA Motha to pursue the issue remain unfulfilled since coming to power. The conference underscores TUGMP’s continued emphasis on tribal rights, social justice, and grassroots mobilisation.
