Agartala, Aug 8: Amid speculation over the future of the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Saturday declined to divulge details of the recent high-level meetings in New Delhi, saying discussions were yet to reach a final stage.
Asked about the deliberations attended by senior BJP leaders from Tripura, Saha urged reporters to wait for the “right time” for further details.
“All of you must have seen the pictures on social media platforms. Constructive discussions pertaining to the ensuing VC polls in the TTAADC areas took place. At this point of time, I have nothing more to disclose,” Saha said.
Responding to whether the BJP and Tipra Motha could jointly contest the elections, the Chief Minister said the matter had not yet been finalised.
“Things are yet to reach the final stage. Once the talks reach the final stage, I will be in a position to disclose further,” he said.
Saha, however, kept the possibility of a joint electoral fight open, saying it “may happen” and that developments would become clear in due course.
According to the Chief Minister, various aspects of the forthcoming polls were discussed during the Delhi meetings. On the implementation of the tripartite agreement involving the Centre, Tripura government and Tipra Motha, Saha described it as an “ongoing process.”
Senior state BJP leaders, including the Chief Minister, attended meetings in New Delhi with the party’s central leadership.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman reached New Delhi on Saturday, sources said. MLA Ranjit Debbarma is also reportedly camping there, while Minister Brishaketu Debbarma is expected to reach the national capital.
Sources said Tipra Motha leaders are likely to meet Union Home Ministry officials on Sunday to discuss several issues, particularly implementation of the tripartite accord signed in 2024, following which Tipra Motha joined the BJP-led ruling coalition.
Tipra Motha leaders have maintained that implementation of the accord was a key objective behind joining the government. Sources indicated that issues concerning representation in the state Council of Ministers could also figure in the discussions.
With central leaders handling the negotiations, state leaders of both parties have largely refrained from commenting publicly, even as political attention remains focused on the alliance’s future and the upcoming electoral contests.
