Justice moved a step closer in the murder case of delivery worker Prasenjit Sarkar as the Dharmanagar court on Saturday rejected the bail applications of all five accused, directing that they remain in judicial custody until January 9.

The court’s decision came after repeated attempts by the defence to secure bail. Petitions were filed on three separate occasions, but each time the court refused to grant relief, citing the seriousness of the offence, the gravity of the allegations, and the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Senior advocate Sankar Lodh, assisted by advocate Debdas Bakshi, appeared on behalf of the victim’s side. The prosecution strongly opposed the bail pleas, submitting documents and placing detailed arguments before the court to justify continued judicial custody of the accused.

Following the ruling, members of Prasenjit Sarkar’s family expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s order. “We are happy with today’s decision and have full faith in the administration and the judiciary. We hope the trial proceeds swiftly and the guilty are punished,” family members said.

The murder of Prasenjit Sarkar has sent shockwaves across Dharmanagar and nearby areas since December 14, 2025. The young delivery worker was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by five individuals. Reports indicated that racial slurs were used during the incident and that Sarkar was subjected to a brutal attack. Initially, the incident was portrayed as a case of suicide, but subsequent evidence, public pressure, and protests compelled the police to register it as a murder case.

Since then, the case has emerged as a rallying point for protests across Tripura, with activists and civil society groups highlighting broader concerns related to social justice, racial discrimination, and the safety and dignity of workers. Many observers believe the court’s refusal to grant bail has restored public confidence and injected fresh hope into the pursuit of justice, even as the community continues to await a final verdict that will ensure accountability and closure.
