Agartala, July 10: Tripura Police have detained four suspects in connection with the alleged assault on Guwahati-based industrialist Kamaljyoti Choudhury and his driver in Agartala, an incident that occurred during the ongoing Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026 and has sparked concerns over the safety of visiting investors.
Police said the four accused were produced before a local court, which granted five days’ police remand to facilitate further investigation into the case.
The incident took place at around 4.40 p.m. on Thursday near Badharghat College Chowmuhani, when Choudhury was travelling in his vehicle from a city hotel to the conclave venue at the Hapania International Fair Ground.
According to police, the confrontation began after a motorcycle allegedly collided with Choudhury’s vehicle, triggering a heated argument. During the altercation, the industrialist’s driver, Tanmoy Deb, was allegedly attacked by a group of youths. He sustained serious injuries, including a broken tooth and head injuries.
When Choudhury stepped out of the vehicle to intervene, he was also allegedly assaulted. Eyewitnesses claimed the businessman was punched and forced to take shelter inside a nearby battery shop to escape the attackers. They described him as visibly shaken after the incident.
Some local residents alleged that police personnel stationed nearby did not intervene immediately to stop the assault. However, police have not yet responded officially to these allegations.
Following the incident, Choudhury was offered medical treatment but reportedly declined extensive care, stating that his injuries were minor. He later proceeded to attend the business conclave under police escort. His injured driver was initially admitted to ILS Hospital before being referred to GB Pant Hospital for further treatment.
Senior police officials said the detained suspects are being questioned to reconstruct the sequence of events, identify the role of each accused and determine the circumstances leading to the assault. Further arrests have not been ruled out.
The attack has drawn attention within business and industry circles, with observers expressing concern that such incidents could undermine Tripura’s efforts to project itself as a safe and investor-friendly destination. The Destination Tripura Business Conclave has brought together policymakers, diplomats, industrialists and investors from across India and several foreign countries to explore investment opportunities in the state.
