Agartala: Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte on Saturday visited Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Agartala to assess healthcare services, identify gaps in service delivery, and review the hospital’s existing infrastructure and facilities.
During the visit, Gitte was accompanied by Health Director Dr. Debashri Debbarma and IGM Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Nirmal Sarkar. The team inspected several departments of the hospital, including the Paediatric Unit, and interacted with hospital authorities to understand the challenges faced in delivering healthcare services to patients.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Gitte emphasized the importance of IGM Hospital in the state’s healthcare system. He described the hospital as the second most significant healthcare institution in Tripura after the Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital.
“IGM Hospital plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to a large section of the population. The state government is committed to developing modern facilities and strengthening healthcare infrastructure here to ensure better treatment and patient care,” he said.
The Health Secretary stated that the primary objective of the visit was to identify shortcomings in service delivery and address issues related to manpower, infrastructure, equipment, and the availability of medicines. He noted that the hospital experiences a substantial patient load, particularly in its Outpatient Department (OPD), which often results in pressure on existing resources and services.
To improve efficiency and reduce waiting times, the government is exploring measures to enhance service delivery. These include the introduction of additional specialist doctors and the expansion of healthcare services in key departments. Efforts are also being made to strengthen hospital infrastructure and improve the overall patient experience.
Gitte further informed that discussions were held regarding the recent allegation of medical negligence linked to the death of a pregnant woman. The matter was reviewed with hospital authorities during the visit.
He assured that the government is treating the issue seriously and that appropriate action would be taken if any lapses or negligence are established following the inquiry.
The visit is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade healthcare facilities, improve service standards, and ensure accessible and quality medical care for citizens across Tripura.
