Agartala, September 7, 2026: The Left Front on Monday staged a protest march in Agartala and submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, alleging that opposition candidates were being obstructed and intimidated while attempting to file nominations for the September 28 Village Committee elections.

The Left Front claimed that candidates in several parts of Tripura were facing pressure, threats and other forms of obstruction during the nomination process. The Opposition alliance primarily blamed the ruling BJP and its alliance partner, the Tipra Motha Party, for the alleged incidents.

Carrying party flags and placards, Left Front leaders and supporters marched through the streets of Agartala and raised slogans against the alleged harassment of opposition candidates.

Addressing the protesters, Left leaders alleged that attempts were being made in different parts of the state to prevent opposition candidates from participating in the electoral process. They warned that such incidents could undermine the credibility of the Village Committee elections if not addressed immediately.

The Left Front said the administration must ensure that every candidate is able to submit nomination papers freely and without fear or interference. It also demanded adequate security for candidates throughout the electoral process, including nomination filing, scrutiny, polling and counting.

A delegation of Left Front leaders subsequently met the District Magistrate and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate intervention. The delegation urged the administration to investigate complaints of intimidation and obstruction and take appropriate action wherever violations are established.

The Opposition also called for strict political neutrality on the part of the administration and election machinery, arguing that every eligible candidate must be given an equal opportunity to contest.

Left leaders said preventing a candidate from filing nominations could effectively eliminate electoral competition before voters get an opportunity to exercise their franchise. They warned that the nomination stage was therefore critical to ensuring a free and fair election.

The protest comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the Village Committee polls. The Left Front warned that it could intensify its agitation if the administration failed to ensure a level playing field.

The BJP and Tipra Motha did not immediately respond to the allegations.
