Bishalgarh, Aug 8 — The Bishalgarh court on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment with hard labour for the brutal murder of his friend in Kamalasagar tea garden in 2023.
The incident dates back to November 23, 2023, when the accused, Bhakta Munda, and the victim, Janesh Munda, were returning home after attending a wedding. According to case records, an argument broke out between the two on their way back. The quarrel escalated, and in a fit of rage, Bhakta allegedly picked up a brick and smashed it on Janesh’s head, causing fatal injuries.
Local residents discovered Janesh lying in a pool of blood and informed the police. He was rushed to the nearest hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police swiftly arrested Bhakta Munda, and a murder case was registered against him.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by government advocate Ripon Sarkar, presented eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence, and the post-mortem report to establish the sequence of events and the accused’s role in the killing. The court found the evidence compelling and convicted Bhakta under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder.
Announcing the verdict, the court sentenced Bhakta to life imprisonment with hard labour, signalling a stern message against acts of extreme violence. The convict will serve his sentence in prison, and the punishment includes rigorous work as per prison regulations.
Speaking to the media after the pronouncement, government advocate Ripon Sarkar said, “Justice has been delivered for the victim and his family. This verdict will act as a deterrent to those who think they can take the law into their own hands.”
