Agartala, Aug 8: In a significant anti-narcotics operation, police from the Baijalbari Police Station seized 37 kg of dry cannabis (ganja) from a vehicle at the Belfang Naka Point on Friday afternoon. Acting on a tip-off, the police team had set up a checkpoint to intercept a suspected vehicle transporting illegal substances.
According to police sources, around 2:30 PM, a white Maruti car bearing registration number TR 04 A 0342 approached the checkpoint. As the vehicle was stopped, two individuals inside the car attempted to flee the scene, abandoning the vehicle. However, the police managed to apprehend one of them, identified as Subrata Debnath. The other accused managed to escape and is currently on the run.
Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, police discovered a total of 70 packets of dry cannabis hidden inside the car doors. Officer-in-Charge of Baijalbari Police Station, Jugal Tripura, confirmed that the total weight of the seized contraband was approximately 37 kilograms.
“The operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs. While one of the suspects has been arrested, efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding accomplice. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the contraband has been sent for official weighing and documentation,” OC Tripura said.
The arrest and seizure underscore the growing concerns about the use of Tripura’s border areas for drug smuggling and trafficking. Police have intensified surveillance and routine checks in vulnerable zones to crack down on the narcotics trade.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to identify the broader network involved in the smuggling of the seized contraband.
