Agartala: Oct 03: A dramatic jailbreak at Kalikapur prison in North Tripura on Wednesday morning, coinciding with Maha Navami celebrations, has sent shockwaves across the state and raised questions over prison security.

According to officials, six convicted criminals managed to escape after launching a violent assault on prison staff and breaking the lock of the main gate. In the attack, one jail official, Gedu Mia, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

In a swift counter-operation, security forces managed to nab two of the escapees within hours. Narayan Chandra Dutta, a Bangladeshi national from Feni, was caught by locals and BSF personnel while attempting to cross the border through Malakar Basti. Earlier, Abdul Fatta, a resident of Nilam Bazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district, was intercepted by Dharmanagar police near West Chandrapur while trying to flee.

However, four fugitives remain at large, including notorious dacoit Nazim Uddin, Rahim Ali, Sunil Debbarma (serving a life term), and Rozan Ali. Their escape has triggered an intensive manhunt by police, with multiple teams deployed across North Tripura. The Border Security Force (BSF) and other law enforcement agencies are coordinating efforts to prevent the fugitives from crossing into neighboring states or Bangladesh.

Authorities have also detained a suspected accomplice believed to have assisted in the jailbreak. Intensive interrogation is underway to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and identify possible lapses in security arrangements.

The unprecedented escape has raised serious concerns about prison management and law enforcement coordination in the state. With four hardened criminals still at large, Tripura remains on high alert, as security forces race against time to restore public confidence and ensure the fugitives are brought back to justice.
