The event began at around 9 am with floral tributes being offered at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at Unity Park, located adjacent to the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
Municipal Council Chairman Sapna Baidya inaugurated the programme by offering a garland and water to trees in the park as a symbolic gesture of respect for nature and Gandhi's emphasis on simplicity and sustainable living.
Tributes were also paid to the bust of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, recalling the contributions of the country's prominent leaders during the freedom struggle.
Municipal Council Vice-Chairman Satyabrata Saha, social worker Debashish Bhowmik, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Pabitra Das and Sports and Cultural Standing Committee president Nepal Chandra Das were among those present at the programme.
A number of other elected representatives, officials and local residents also attended the event.
Speakers at the programme recalled Gandhi's contribution to India's freedom movement and highlighted his principles of truth, non-violence and service to humanity.
They said Gandhi's philosophy and way of life continue to hold relevance, particularly his emphasis on simplicity, self-reliance, moral courage and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The speakers also urged people, particularly the younger generation, to draw inspiration from Gandhi's ideals and incorporate values of discipline, tolerance and social responsibility into their daily lives.
As part of the programme, prizes were distributed among winners of a recently organised "Sit and Draw" competition. The initiative provided an opportunity for children and young participants to showcase their creativity and artistic skills.
The formal programme was followed by a cultural presentation by local artists. The performances added a vibrant touch to the commemorative event while providing a platform for local talent.
The observance concluded with participants reaffirming the importance of Gandhi's ideals of peace, harmony and service in public and community life.
