Agartala, October 2: Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Thursday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary, recalling the freedom fighter's message of non-violence, peace and truth and calling upon people to uphold his ideals in their daily lives.
The Governor first paid homage at the statue of Gandhi at Murti Prangan in the Circuit House premises and later visited Gandhighat, where programmes were organised to commemorate the Father of the Nation.
Nallu offered a floral wreath at Gandhi's statue in the presence of ministers, senior government officials and other dignitaries. Musical performances dedicated to Gandhi were also organised during the programme.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, the Governor said Gandhi's principles continued to hold relevance in contemporary society.
He highlighted the importance of non-violence, peace and transparency and urged citizens to contribute constructively to society and the country's development.
"Gandhiji's ideals are timeless. Each of us must embrace them in our daily lives to build a stronger, more harmonious nation," Nallu said.
Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, who attended the programme, also paid tribute to Gandhi and stressed the continuing relevance of his teachings.
"May the timeless ideals of truth, non-violence, peace, and selfless service preached by Mahatma Gandhi Ji continue to inspire generations and guide us towards a more just, harmonious, and prosperous society," she said.
West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, senior officials, community representatives and other dignitaries were present at the programme.
The participation of officials and members of the community marked the state's observance of Gandhi Jayanti and reflected the public remembrance of Gandhi's contribution to India's freedom movement.
After the programme at the Circuit House, the Governor proceeded to Gandhighat, where further events were held to mark Gandhi's birth anniversary.
The programmes included discussions and cultural activities centred on Gandhi's life, his role in India's freedom struggle and his vision of social harmony.
The observance also highlighted Gandhi's emphasis on peaceful social engagement and the role of individuals in promoting harmony and public welfare.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, whose philosophy of non-violence became closely associated with India's freedom movement.
The programmes in Agartala concluded with tributes to Gandhi and a reiteration of the need to preserve and promote the values associated with his life and teachings.
