Agartala, May 26: Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jiten Choudhury has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for his compassionate response and financial aid to the family of Prasenjit Debnath (11) and Priyanka Debnath (7), who tragically drowned on May 17, 2025, in Chanmari, Agartala.

While appreciating the Chief Minister’s gesture, Choudhury has urged the government to extend similar support to the families affected by two other heartbreaking incidents involving the deaths of young children.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister on May 25, 2025, Choudhury called for an independent inquiry into the Chanmari incident to address concerns surrounding the cause and circumstances of the drowning.

He also drew attention to two earlier tragedies. The first involved Piyali Debbarma (10) and Priyanka Debbarma (9), two schoolgirls who drowned in the Mohanpur subdivision on June 28, 2024. The second case is that of a nine-year-old girl from Kaladhep, Sabroom, whose body was found in a forest with injury marks on May 21, 2025.

“Despite repeated appeals from the grieving families in Mohanpur, they have not yet received any financial assistance,” Choudhury wrote, emphasizing that failing to help these families would be inhumane.

Regarding the Sabroom case, Choudhury joined the public in demanding a thorough investigation into the suspected abuse and murder of the child, urging the administration to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.

The letter reflects Choudhury’s appeal for compassionate governance, transparency, and accountability, while urging the state government to prioritize child safety and provide equitable relief to all affected families.
