New delhi: Feb 19: Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, has been chosen as the leader of the BJP legislature party in Delhi, paving the way for her to become the city’s next Chief Minister. The decision was made on Wednesday at a BJP meeting held at the state party office, with central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankhar overseeing the process. Gupta, 50, will be the fourth woman to assume the role of Delhi CM, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
Gupta, a professional lawyer, expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her by the BJP leadership. She vowed to work with utmost honesty and dedication for the welfare of Delhi’s residents and to take the city to new heights. “This faith has evoked new energy and motivation in me,” Gupta stated. Her leadership has been widely welcomed, with congratulatory messages from top BJP leaders, including Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nirmala Sitharaman.
Her husband, Manish Gupta, also expressed his support, acknowledging the significant responsibility placed on her. Parvesh Verma, a prominent BJP leader, was speculated to be appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister, though this has yet to be confirmed. Senior BJP leader Vijender Gupta is expected to be named the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
The formal swearing-in ceremony will take place on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan, with Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena administering the oath. The event will be attended by key political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other prominent BJP leaders. The BJP secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 seats, reducing the AAP to just 22.
